Unifabs Team Chief Executive Jason Austin Headshot

Jason Austin

Founder & Chief Executive

I founded the company in 2007 with the mission to provide exceptional customer service and establish Unifabs as a leading UK sheet metal and fabrication specialist. It’s amazing to see how the company has grown since then.

From the services we provide, to the team I’ve been privileged to work with, and the relationships built with customers and suppliers along the way; it’s been an incredible journey.

Today, as Chief Executive, my role encompasses setting the company’s strategic direction, developing short and long-term strategies that focus on growth and investment. Working closely with Managing Director, Tom James, we are dedicated to ensuring that the business continues to thrive.

I feel it’s the relationships we develop with our customers. When we say ‘Design, Manufacture, Finish, Deliver’, we mean it. For us it’s not just about producing the parts, it’s about the entire process and the value we add along the way. We collaborate closely with clients, utilising our industrial design and manufacturing expertise, coupled with advanced technology, to enhance the end product.

Something that sets us apart from our competitors is the capability to transform raw materials into a complete product all on our premises, package it, and then deliver it to you, your customer or site. Effectively we’re able to act as an extension of your business, from design to delivery.

Managing Director

From a young age, I was always interested in how things worked, trying to fix and improve them, so a career in engineering was inevitable.

I have been part of Unifabs from the very beginning, joining the team as a general labourer. Such is the case in a small company, over time you get involved in all aspects of the business. For me, this involved learning the press brakes, cutting machines, welding and programming. As Unifabs grew, my role developed through supervisory and management positions to my current role today.

Choosing just one part is impossible!

A new challenging project is always exciting. Over the years, we’ve had many; some highly challenging from many different aspects, be it the time frame, engineering complexity, quality requirements, or a combination of all! Working with a great team to create something we can be proud of is extremely satisfying and a real highlight.

Another hugely exciting aspect is helping to guide and develop the careers of future engineers and employees. I was given a number of opportunities over the years, and it is tremendously rewarding to be able to do the same for others, particularly through the Unifabs Academy.

Random fact

I’m obsessed with coffee! As an engineer at heart, I treat making espresso as a complex task with many variables to measure and record. The minerals in the water, time since roasting, the exact weight of beans before and after grinding, and brew time all matter. Making a flat white is more like a small science experiment!

Unifabs Team Technical Director Matt Grealy Headshot

Matt Grealy

Technical Director

I started my career at Unifabs in 2013 after completing a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering. I was looking for my next challenge, and I definitely found it at Unifabs!

I began in the role of Junior CAD Engineer/Programmer, progressing through several roles centring around design, leading to my current position today. With the amazing growth of the business over the years, I’ve had the chance to learn and hone my skills using state-of-the-art technology, and continue to fuel my passion for engineering.

Every day is different; there is a new challenge to overcome every time I get into the office! In my current role, I oversee the Design office and our R&D area, help with organising the training of our growing Unifabs team of apprentices, and regularly meet with customers to collaborate on design and manufacturing improvements. I love having the opportunity to problem solve in a fast-paced environment and collaborating with other like-minded engineers to find the best solutions. I find it extremely rewarding to watch ideas develop from a sketch on a page, seeing it progress through every process to the finished product, all in-house.

Music is a passion of mine; I can already play the guitar and drums, and I am currently teaching myself to play the piano. I used to play in a band, performing gigs on the weekends both locally and further afield; I’d love to start it up again.

The most thrilling aspect of my job is witnessing the direct impact of my efforts on the production floor. As we incorporate fresh ideas and methodologies, I take pride in observing the positive results we achieve for the company and its customers reflected in the products we manufacture.

Cooking has fascinated me since I was little. It’s more than a hobby; it’s my genuine passion. Creating tasty dishes that family and friends enjoy brings me great satisfaction, but I must confess, I love savouring them just as much!

Definitely the Sales Manager! In all seriousness, it seems to be different client to client. Some really value our ability to support them with and improve an existing product, some our technical expertise, while others value our honesty, communication and service levels above all else.

I’m not ashamed to say I’m a huge fan of Star Wars. I try to pass off my figure collection as my kids. In reality, they’re locked in a glass cabinet, away from small, sticky fingers!

Within four years I’d become the Office Manager, and now lead a team of skilled administrators. We work closely with the senior leadership team to ensure the smooth running of daily business operations.

Definitely the Unifabs team. From the moment I joined, I could tell that everyone was invested in the company’s success and willing to go out of their way to help others. The camaraderie and positive attitude make coming to work a pleasure.  But beyond the great team, it’s also provided the opportunity to advocate for apprenticeships and how they can lead to a successful career. Working with the team to set up the Academy, and also mentoring a colleague undertaking her Business Administration apprenticeship has been a rewarding experience.

Random fact

I’m sure my house is cursed! I recently became a first-time homeowner and it has been somewhat of an adventure so far. On the day I planned to move in, the chimney decided to collapse into the roof. And as if that wasn’t enough, I also experienced an attempted burglary!

Night Shift Production Manager

After 12 months, and having built up the team to two shifts, I moved into a production management role. In 2022, due to the growth of the business, I was promoted to night shift production manager; a very challenging and rewarding role that enabled Unifabs to continue to grow.

One thing apparent about the people who work at Unifabs is their skill, but also their camaraderie, and this is something that extends beyond working together. Take ’Team Unidubs’ for example, a group of Unifabs colleagues with a shared love of Volkswagen camper vans. We take group trips together and help each other with maintenance and repairs. A great bunch of people with a shared passion. New members are always welcome!
