Investing in the next generation of engineers is something Unifabs strongly supports. Through our apprenticeship academy we offer a hands-on supportive learning environment within which we can help an engineering technician apprentice to develop their knowledge and skills in a variety of manufacturing methods from profiling and bending to fabrication and finishing.

As it is National Apprenticeship Week this week (6th – 12th of February 2023), we thought we’d introduce one of our apprentices to you and give a little insight into what he’s been up to so far on his Engineering Technician apprenticeship with Unifabs Academy.

Mason Hurst

Engineering Technician Apprentice
Joined Unifabs Academy August 2022

Mason joined us last August to start his training in Manufacturing. Here Mason answers a few brief questions about his experience so far, and how he finds working at Unifabs.  We also learn a little more about what interests him, inside and outside of the Academy.

Engineering Technician Apprenticeship: Mason’s experience so far.

What are you most looking forward to learning in your apprenticeship?

I am looking forward to learning TIG welding and also CNC cutting.

What are your future ambitions?

I haven’t decided yet, I want to get a feel for the different areas of manufacturing engineering.

You have been with us for 6 months. What have you learnt so far?

I have learnt how to program and operate a press brake. I have also learnt how to MIG weld and spent some time in assembly, putting together products. At the moment I am learning some processes on the powder coating line, like hanging and blowing out.

How would you describe the kind of people that work at Unifabs?

Patient, well mannered, respectful.

With an apprenticeship you earn while you learn. What did you spend your first wages on and what would you most like to splash out on?

I spent my first wages on McDonalds, but I like to splash out on buying equipment for my motorbike.

What was your favourite subject at school?

My favourite subject at school was Design/Technology.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
